Different Methods Used By Top Level Swimmers - 1187 Words
Objectives Pereira, Ruschel, Hubert, Machado, Roesler, Fernandes, Vilas-Boas recently investigated the kinematic, kinetic, and electromyographic characteristics of four front crawl (or freestyle) flip turn technique variants. Previous research has suggested that optimizing the turn technique can mean the difference of 0.20s per lap in a swimming event (Maglischo, 2003). Two-tenths of a second is often the difference between first and second place in the Olympics. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe and compare four variants or styles most commonly used by top-level swimmers: (1) dorsal rolling, lateral touch in the wall, pushing with rotation and ventral gliding; (2) dorsal rolling, dorsal touch in the wall, pushing with rotation and ventral gliding; (3) dorsal rolling, lateral touch in the wall, pushing in a lateral position and lateral gliding; and (4) lateral rolling, lateral touch in the wall, pushing with rotation and ventral gliding. Methods Participants for the study included seventeen national level swimmers (nine male and eight female, with 8 practices per week and 7years of training background). The mean age, body mass, and height of the males were 19.5 à ± 2.6 years old, 73.5 à ± 9.1kg, and 1.8à ± 0.09m. The mean age, body mass, and height of the females were 16.0 à ± 2.8 years old, 57.7 à ± 9.0kg, and 1.66 à ± 0.03m. In preparation for data collection, swimmers were asked which turn style they preferred to use. Then, they underwent two practice and twoShow MoreRelatedSwim in History and in Greek Epic Poems Essay1771 Words à |à 8 Pagesmillions of people partaking in it.
